The Sacred Heart of Puri

History & Significance

Rising above the shores of the Bay of Bengal, the Jagannath Temple of Puri was built in its present form in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva. Its towering shikhara and the annual Rath Yatra chariot festival make it one of the most recognisable sacred sites in India.

As one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, Puri holds the sanctum of the Lord of the Universe, worshipped alongside Balabhadra and Subhadra. The temple's Mahaprasad, cooked in the world's largest kitchen, is considered sacred enough to erase caste and social distinction among those who share it.
