Shri Kashi Vishwanath

The Sacred Heart of Varanasi

History & Significance

Situated on the western bank of the holy river Ganga, Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the focal point of faith for millions of Hindus. The temple has been rebuilt several times over the centuries; the current structure was consecrated in 1780 by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, and its golden spire was later gifted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

It is believed that a single darshan of the Jyotirlinga is a soul-cleansing experience that transcends the cycle of birth and death, granting moksha to the devotee. Kashi is regarded as the spiritual epicentre of the universe in Hindu cosmology.
