History & Significance

Built over centuries by successive Pandya, Chola, and Nayak rulers, the Ramanathaswamy Temple is renowned for having the longest corridor of any Hindu temple in the world, lined with over a thousand intricately carved pillars. Its innermost sanctum enshrines the Shiva lingam that, according to legend, Lord Rama himself installed before setting out to rescue Sita.

As both a Jyotirlinga and one of the four Char Dham, a pilgrimage here is considered essential to the Hindu faith. Devotees bathe at its 22 sacred theerthams (wells) before darshan, a ritual believed to cleanse sins accumulated across lifetimes.
