Shri Sankat Mochan Hanuman

The Sacred Heart of Varanasi

History & Significance

Legend holds that Goswami Tulsidas, author of the Ramcharitmanas, saw Hanuman himself at this spot on the banks of the Assi river and established the temple here in the 16th century. It remains one of Varanasi's most visited shrines, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Hanuman's sacred days.

Devotees come to Sankat Mochan specifically to have troubles and obstacles — sankat — lifted, whether in health, career, or family. The temple's continuous Hanuman Chalisa recitations and its role as a spiritual refuge make it one of the most emotionally significant sanctums in Kashi.
